This application, for the site formerly occupied by the Crouch Yacht Club is, to our way of thinking, a model of the sort of sensitive and not-greedy improvement that is possible in Burnham. It was occasioned by the sad demise of the Crouch Yacht Club, which faced a declining membership and was obliged to sell its building. The building was bought by its immediate neighour, and is currently the subject of a planning application for a residential conversion, by the removal of large parts of the rather crude additions put on to it by the CYC in earlier years. In this case, the sorrow at the loss of a significant part of Burnham’s maritime tapestry is moderated by the knowledge that it is likely to result in an improvement in the built environment.
